Helen Wilkinson Reynolds in Dutch Houses in the Hudson Valley Before 1776 tells us that Barnegat means "firehole" in Dutch and refers to the stone kilns along the Hudson just south of Poughkeepsie which produced lime. The oyster shells were harvested and burned to create the lime which was used in making mortar for brick houses.
