Matthew Vassar and his father founded a brewery and it was the success of this business which enabled Vassar to found the college which bears his name. Curiously that was not his first idea. Edgar Bacon in The Hudson from Ocean to Source tells us that he really wanted to erect a monument to Henry Hudson. He published the idea in the newspaper and when there was no reaction at all, he decided instead to found a woman’s college in 1861.
