The History of Rockland County by Frank Green says that with the building of the New York and Erie Railroad and the very long pier came new prosperity to the town which had been called Taulman's Landing after Major Arthur Taulman. In 1839 a Dr. Lord named the town Piermont using the name pier from the railroad pier and mont from the mountains above the town.
