A man by the name of Daniel Gomez built a sturdy stone house and a mill here in 1711 and 1714. He had the distinction of being the first known man in this area of the Jewish faith and so was known as such. The creek which today is known as Maune Kill was known at this time as Jew’s Creek. Gomez operated a very successful mill operation and became one of the richest men in New York. In 1772 the house was sold to Wolfert Acker who expanded it and subsequently sold it to Henry Armstrong, the author of Rutledge, a novel about the Civil War.
