Hastings

Today Hastings is known as Hastings-on-Hudson and is a residential suburban community. Across from Hastings was once the highest points of the Palisades known as Indian Head. For many years it was a major tourist attraction for the steamboats that traveled up the river. Then in the late 19th century when there was a demanding market for gravel to make roads, a contractor blasted the landmark and crushed it into gravel.

Hastings was where Hudson River Painter Jasper Cropsey made his home in 1885. Ever Rest holds one of the largest collections of Cropsey's work. It is maintained by the Newington-Cropsey Foundation.
