Frances Dunwell in The Hudson River Highlands mentions that in the 1840's three members of the Pell family built fashionable houses in Highland Falls.. An 1878 map of the Hudson included in The Hudson by Daylight by William F. Link shows there was the Alfred Pell estate to the north of J. P. Morgan's estate, then Arthur Pell's estate and then the William Pell estate.
