Sneden's Dock

The History of Rockland County by Frank Green tells us that Snedan's Dock or Snedan's Landing was the name for the landing which was the other end of the Dobbs Ferry run. It evidently was known as Dobbs Ferry during the Revolution until the confusion over which side of the river it referred to dictated that it be changed. The family known as Sneden also operated a ferry. That name was then changed to Rockland and later to Palisades. Green says, "The hamlet contains many fine residences, and its streets and avenues are handsomely laid out. The old wharf, where for so many years, the produce of a large section of the country was brought to be shipped by steamboat, has almost disappeared. All that remains of its old time customs, is a row boat ferry which still exists for the benefit of the casual traveller."
