In 1830 a group of delegates met and resolved to create a University in New York similar to the University of London. Funds for the new University were raised from private donors. Among the University's supporters there were many Presbyterian ministers who lobbied for an alternative curriculum to the predominantly Episcopal Columbia College. Classes began in 1832 in rented rooms but moved by 1835 to new headquarters on Washington Square.
