The ancestral home of Gulian C. Verplanck was a mansion built at Fishkill Landing by his grandfather of the same name, who along with Francis Rombout was the original purchaser of land from the Wappinger Indians in 1683. Most of that purchase would later become Fishkill. The house was the headquarters of Baron Steuben during the Revolution and the New York Legislature held sessions in the house before moving to Kingston.
The Gulian Verplanck of Wade's day was born in 1786 in New York City. He became a lawyer and statesman. He wrote Uses of the Evidences of Revealed Religion and was a professor at the General Theological Seminary. He also edited an edition of Shakespeare's work.
